Questions About Temperament Assessments
Is a temperament assessment only for service dogs or working dogs?
No. While temperament assessments have traditionally been used for service dogs, therapy dogs, police K-9s, military dogs, and other working dogs, Brain First™ believes every puppy deserves the same thoughtful evaluation. Whether a puppy becomes a family companion, a therapy dog, a service dog, or a working partner, understanding that puppy's natural temperament and developmental needs helps create a stronger lifelong relationship.
Does a temperament assessment predict a puppy's entire future?
No. A temperament assessment is not a crystal ball. It provides valuable information about a puppy's natural characteristics and developmental progress at the time of the assessment. Just like children, puppies continue learning, growing, and adapting throughout their lives. Our assessments help us understand where a puppy is beginning—not place limits on where that puppy can go.
Why do you assess puppies more than once?
Because development is a journey, not a single moment. The brain changes rapidly during the first weeks of life. Each developmental stage provides new information about how a puppy is learning, adapting, solving problems, and interacting with the world. Multiple assessments give us a much clearer understanding than one evaluation alone.
What if my puppy doesn't 'pass' a temperament assessment?
Brain First™ does not believe in 'passing' or 'failing' a puppy. Our goal is not to judge puppies. Our goal is to understand them. Every puppy has strengths. Every puppy has areas where additional support may be beneficial. Those differences help us make better recommendations for families, future careers, and continued development.
Can a puppy's behavior change?
Absolutely. Healthy brain development, positive experiences, thoughtful guidance, appropriate environments, and lifelong learning all influence how behavior develops over time. That is one of the reasons Brain First™ focuses on development rather than simply evaluating behavior at one point in time.
Can families learn these observation skills?
Yes. In fact, we believe they should. One of the goals of Brain First™ is to help families recognize the subtle ways puppies communicate through body language, posture, movement, facial expression, and interaction with their environment. The better families understand their puppies, the better puppies understand their families. Learning becomes a partnership instead of a guessing game.
Why doesn't every breeder perform developmental assessments like this?
Every breeder has different goals, different experiences, and different philosophies. Brain First™ is one approach that emphasizes early brain development, repeated developmental assessments, environmental design, and family education. We believe these tools provide valuable information that helps us better understand each puppy and better prepare both puppies and families for lifelong success.
Is Brain First™ trying to replace traditional training?
No. Brain First™ is designed to complement—not replace—the important work that trainers, veterinarians, breeders, and other canine professionals do. Our primary focus is understanding how the developing brain influences behavior and helping puppies and families build a strong foundation before lifelong learning continues. Training teaches skills. Brain First™ helps build the foundation that makes learning those skills more natural.
