Every movement, posture, facial expression, interaction, and recovery tells us something about how a puppy is processing the world around them. Rather than relying on a single reaction, we observe hundreds of small details that, together, help us better understand each puppy's development.
Some of the characteristics we observe include:
Understanding the Whole Puppy
Hundreds of small details, observed over time, reveal how each puppy naturally thinks, learns, communicates, adapts, and develops.
Facial Expressions & Micro-Expressions
Small changes around the eyes, ears, mouth, and facial muscles often provide early clues about a puppy's emotional state, curiosity, uncertainty, confidence, or engagement.
Body Posture
How a puppy carries its body can reveal confidence, hesitation, relaxation, tension, interest, or avoidance before the puppy ever takes a step.
Movement & Exploration
Does the puppy move confidently into a new environment? Pause to gather information? Follow another puppy? Choose to investigate independently? Every puppy gathers information differently.
Environmental Awareness
Some puppies notice every sound, movement, and change around them. Others remain focused on a person, another puppy, or the task in front of them. Both styles provide insight into how that puppy naturally processes information.
Social Communication
We carefully observe how puppies communicate with littermates, people, and their environment. Do they invite interaction, observe before joining, seek connection, or communicate clearly with other puppies?
Recovery & Adaptability
Perhaps one of the most valuable observations is not the initial response—but what happens next. How quickly does the puppy regain confidence, solve the problem, and choose a strategy?

No single behavior tells us everything we need to know.
One observation never determines a puppy's future.
