What Is a Puppy Temperament Assessment?

Understanding who a puppy naturally is — so we can support the brain first, and let behavior follow.

When most people hear the words “temperament test,” they picture a puppy taking a single test to determine whether it is suitable for a particular job or family.

At Brain First™, we believe the process is much more meaningful than that.

A Puppy Temperament & Development Assessment is a structured series of observations that helps us understand who a puppy naturally is before life experiences begin shaping how those natural traits are expressed.

Rather than looking for a puppy that is “good” or “bad,” we evaluate each puppy as an individual. Every puppy is born with unique instincts, character, temperament, learning preferences, and behavioral tendencies. Our goal is to identify those natural strengths so we can support healthy development and help place each puppy in the environment where they are most likely to thrive.

During Our Assessments

What We Observe

Each observation is a small window into who the puppy is becoming.

Natural confidence and curiosity

How readily a puppy explores novel objects, people, and environments.

Social interaction

How a puppy relates to people and littermates through play, proximity, and communication.

Problem-solving abilities

How a puppy approaches puzzles, obstacles, and mild challenges.

Recovery after challenges

How quickly a puppy returns to calm after a startle or mild stressor.

Environmental awareness

How a puppy notices and processes sounds, surfaces, movement, and space.

Body language and communication

What posture, facial expression, and movement reveal about how a puppy feels.

Emotional regulation

A puppy's ability to manage excitement, frustration, and novelty.

Adaptability and resilience

How flexibly a puppy adjusts to changing situations.

Motivation and engagement

What captures a puppy's interest and keeps them connected with a person.

Individual learning style

The unique way each puppy takes in information and responds to guidance.

An Ongoing Process

Not a Single Test

Unlike traditional programs that often rely on a single evaluation, Brain First™ views development as an ongoing process. Each observation provides another piece of the puzzle, helping us understand not only what a puppy is doing today, but how that puppy is developing over time.

Most importantly, our assessments are not designed to judge puppies — they are designed to understand them.

Because when we truly understand a puppy, we can make better decisions for its development, its future family, and its lifelong success.

“Build the brain, and behavior follows.”

When we understand a puppy's natural strengths, we can build a development plan that supports confidence, communication, and lifelong learning.
